In 2020, DHV MED joined the planning process of a land mark recycling facility at Hiriya, officially inaugurated in 2023. his state-of-the-art plant represents a turning point in Israel’s approach to construction waste management, directly addressing the widespread issue of illegal dumping—estimated at nearly one million tons of untreated construction waste annually.
The Hiriya facility serves the entire Tel Aviv metropolitan region, receiving construction waste for advanced processing. After initial coarse sorting, removing non-recyclables such as plastics and nylons—the remaining materials (wood, concrete, metal) are mechanically sorted and crushed..
Concrete waste is further processed by size, washed, screened and refined into high quality reusable products like washed sand and gravel. Approximately 90% of incoming waste is transformed into materials suitable for reuse in construction, roadbuilding, and infrastructure projects.
While the facility’s central location offered logistical benefits, it also required intensive coordination with municipal authorities, stakeholders, developers, and architects. The planning process emphasized minimizing visual and environmental impacts while ensuring seamless integration into the surrounding landscape.
Now processing around 2,000 tons of waste daily, the Hiriya facility has significantly reduced illegal dumping and advanced environmental sustainability in Israel. Its success has established a national model for future recycling initiatives, setting new standards in circular construction practices.
